What is a porcelain veneer?
A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell that gets cemented on to the front of your tooth to give your tooth perfect color and shape. It can be any where from 0.5mm to 1.5mm (very thin). This means that the teeth need to be re-shaped about 0.5mm- 1.5mm to achieve best esthetic results. The color of porcelain veneer can range from very white to natural color, depending on the color you want and the color the dentist recommends to be most esthetic for you. The size and shape can be discussed with the dentist to achieve the most esthetic results.

How many teeth will need a porcelain veneer?
This depends on whether you are doing a full smile make over or just fixing a couple of teeth. If you are fixing a couple of teeth, then you will only need to place the veneer on the teeth that need fixing (misaligned, unhappy with color, chipped tooth, gap). If you are doing a full smile makeover, then you will need to place a porcelain veneer on every tooth you show when you smile. The average person shows 8-10 teeth on the top, and 8-10 teeth on the bottom; this totals 16-20 teeth, but it can vary on a person to person basis.
How many visits will it take to make porcelain veneers?
It depends on how many teeth we are working on. The average is about 2-4 visits. The patient wears temporary veneers while we wait for the porcelain veneers to be fabricated.
How long to porcelain veneers last?
This is common question I get asked, but it is a hard one to answer because it all depends on how the person takes care of them. In practice the average porcelain veneers lasts about 10-15 years. If the person bites on ice chips, fork, or chicken bone, the chances of fracturing the porcelain veneers is high. Usually the porcelain veneer does not chip when eating normal food, only when it bites into something very hard. If you take good care of them, then the porcelain veneer will last a long time.
What will porcelain veneers do for me?
I want to go over some case studies of previous patients.
Patient #1 was an 18 year old female who attended Queens college. She was in her freshman year of college. She presented to my office with her mother expressing her desire to have better teeth and more attractive smile. She was interested in porcelain veneers. She has friends who did it, and she saw people on t.v. with them. Upon evaluating her, I noticed that her front teeth had spacing between them. There was a size and shape discrepancy to the flow of her smile. The teeth had a dark shade to them. She was a good candidate for porcelain veneers. We worked on 6 upper and 6 lower teeth because that is what she showed in her smile. It took 3 visits to complete. We saw that patient 6 months later after completing the porcelain veneers for her routine check up and dental cleaning. When she walked into the office she was glowing. Since the veneers her entire life improved according to her. She was smiling more often, she became a happier person. She was less irritable compared to before. This resulted in her having more friends, going on more dates, getting better grades in college. She was overall a happier person and more confident. Her mother was also very grateful to us for improving her lifestyle.
Patient #2 was a 45 year old female. She presented to our office to see if she would be a candidate for porcelain veneers. She recently had a divorce, and was just not feeling good about herself. Upon evaluation of her smile we noticed that her teeth were severely worn. She clenches and grinds her teeth, this caused her enamel to fracture and wear away. This is common when someone is undergoing a lot of stress in his or her life. The shade of her teeth was also yellowish in color. It was decided that she was a good candidate for porcelain veneers. We decided to do 6 teeth on top and 6 teeth on bottom. This took 3 visits. She was happy with the results. The porcelain veneers made her smile more often, made her happier, and boosted her confidence. As her token of appreciation for us, she has referred us many of her friends for whom we were able to get amazing results using porcelain as well.
There are many other patient cases we can discuss. There are common themes with all of them. Porcelain veneers helped them be a much happier version of themselves, that is something money cannot buy.
- Happier people
- Became less irritable with others
- Gained tremendous confidence
- Became more attractive version of themselves
During your consultation visit we will evaluate to see if you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. We will take some pictures of your teeth, and will discuss what we can do to improve your smile. We can also go over past cases during your consulation visit.
